Strong Hearts Are Mandatory is a series centering in an animal-dominated land known as Media. All of the land’s residents are gifted with intelligence, and a few even with the forbidden practice of magic. Within the contents of Heart of Glass, we follow the perspective of the main hero, a little noble cat known as the Radio Star. Radio is chosen to collect the fragments of a crystal heart left by a mysterious spider monkey only known as the Jester. She is accompanied by two companions, Pictures and Video, joining her in finding the shards scattered across all of Central Media in their occupations of surveillance and courier work, respectively. The opportunity to find the fragments of this broken heart is Radio’s first chance to venture out into the world that she’s only ever been able to listen to from the safety of her windowsill, and she's going to make every heartbeat count. She's just left to hope that Video and Pictures feel this opportunity is as beneficial for them, as it is to her.

Strong Hearts are Mandatory: Heart of Glass is a fresh take on animal fantasy with fleshed out characters and immersive worldbuilding.

While the beginning of the book has slightly slow pacing, the payoff is immense: the ending is full of twists and turns that will keep you dog-earing the pages. Video, Radio, and Pictures are all developed and multi-faceted characters with more than believable motivations. The development Radio both earns and loses at the end of the novel as the narrator is a notable feature of the book. The antagonist, the Jester, was also a delight to read.

In the beginning, the worldbuilding may seem scarily thorough, but it all pieces together into a world that's as full of life as our own. The intricacy of the world of Media is the sure highlight of the novel.

I'll be honest here; I consumed this book in four hours with very few breaks. The plot, characters, and environments almost had beating hearts--pun slightly intended--of their own. Readers will feel just how much time and effort went in to a story written by someone as young as eighteen but as steady paced and thorough as a professional writer's. If you like fantasy, magic, and animals, Heart of Glass has definitely earned its spot on the scratching post.

Strong Hearts Are Mandatory Heart Of Glass Volume 1 Teelia Pelletier 9780998851303 Books Reviews

Good book. Well written
Great book. My daughter loves it
I didn't know if my daughter would like these so I took a chance and bought them both and have not regretted it for a moment. She loves these and is anxiously awaiting the third book, "Stars of the Silver Screen." These are SO GOOD
First off I just wanted to say that I really did enjoy this book and the story that it had to tell. Something about it feels nostalgic, reminding me of the talking animal stories that I love to read and also reminding me of my own stories that I’ve written in the past.

That being said, this book was certainly not without its flaws. I feel it would have been best if the story were a little longer in order to give us more time with the main characters since some things feel kind of rushed and definitely could have been delved further into.

All in all I look forward to seeing where the story goes in the future.
Overall Rating 3/5
Story 3.5/5
Characters 4.5/5
World-Building 4.5/5
Editing/Presentation 1.5/5

I have just finished the story, and, as promised, I intend to give an honest review!
Story The story itself is rather enjoyable, though there are pacing problems throughout and it’s not the most original. At some points, things feel a bit forced. But on the up side, the end had good twists which were slightly foreshadowed throughout, if one knew what to look for. I found the whole start of the story a bit…unenjoyable, quite honestly. I was confused as to what the big deal was about collecting the fragments, as it really wasn’t made too clear nor given much thought. It was much more of, “Let’s go on a journey and collect things!” rather than developing a clear motivation for going on that journey. Some motivations are revealed later, but…it definitely could have used a lot more development. Overall, though, I did enjoy the story and look forward to the next book (though it seems hard to believe that there would be a next one, with the way things ended here).
Characters The characters, for the most part, were well-developed. I liked the small details and definitely enjoyed the scenes of characterization. However, as I said above, some things felt a bit forced, and the relationship between Radio and Pictures felt just like that. It was stated constantly that they were “in love” and yada yada…as the story progressed, it did feel natural, but it definitely started off feeling very forced with the constant narration and filler words. Another note on the characters, but I really could not remember the background characters. They were given names and descriptions, which I quickly forgot over the course of the book, especially when they were brought back in the end. I don’t think they should have been bothered to be named (besides the major-major ones) and some could have been left out entirely. However, the characters were pretty well-developed, even if their motivations could have been made clearer in the beginning.
World-Building I actually really enjoyed the world-building, which is probably the best part of the book. We’re not given too much exposition on the world, and learn of it for ourselves through the challenges the characters face. I especially enjoyed being able to imagine the places, though descriptions were a bit…choppy at times. However, I really like the world established here and look forward to learning more of it in future books. I personally wished there was a map, though, since that would have given me a better understanding of what the lands were like and how they all tied together.
Editing/Presentation This is going to be my biggest complaint of the book. First, I’ll start by saying I really liked the pictures included for each chapter, and how each chapter title was only one word. That was a unique idea. Now…onto the bad parts… This could have done with probably two or three more edits. There were SO many editing mistakes throughout this story, and I’m sorry, but those things bother me VERY much. It is probably since I am an author and editor myself, but…if I have to edit as I go along, I lose interest in the story—which is exactly what happened at the start of the book. There were multiple instances where the punctuation was in the wrong place, there were lots of confusing “details” in run-on sentences that repeated the same thing, words repeated over and over instead of having a broader vocabulary (there was an instance where “already” was stated twice in a sentence and three times in a paragraph, same with “giant”), and a lot of filler. A lot of things could have been taken out and words replaced with better synonyms, so they weren’t repeated. The overall presentation of the book lacked, as well, as the quotes and apostrophes would be straight instead of curved, the page numbers’ text really didn’t fit with the story and seemed to contrast too much with the actual text used, the actual text used of Times New Roman doesn’t seem fit for this story and instead something used for school papers, the page numbers continue on pages in the beginning and end where they shouldn’t, and the spacing is too wide apart and again gives the feel of a school essay. I understand that this is the author’s first book, and that the author is self-published, but a lot of these things could have been tidied up with doing a bit of research and getting an editor (or at least editing the text more thoroughly). How some of these mistakes flew past the author is beyond me, to be honest. I was very disappointed by the sloppy presentation of the book, and hope that the author is able to improve with the next one. The synopsis could also have used some work, though I did enjoy the cover art. I also don’t think the writing itself is all that great…the story, characters, and world might be well done, but I think this would have fit a visual better, as the writing really didn’t bring out too many feelings within me and was just filler at points (if it wasn’t confusing). I’m sure the author will improve, but I was disappointed by the overall quality, as these chapters seemed more like scripts and written for a visual series, instead of a written one.
In short, I overall enjoyed the book, but I was a bit let down by the end of it. The story wasn’t too original and seemed made up at points, but the characters and world really worked well. The writing, editing, and presentation need a lot more focus than anything else. I wish the author luck with her next book, and look forward to seeing improvements with the structure as she continues on. I would recommend this story to a friend.

My son thoroughly enjoyed this book. His review of this book clearly explains why. Great Job to the author, amazing work I loved every second of it and will probably read it again after I finish bingewatching the playlist. The book was really a breath of fresh air loaded to the brim with originality and was extremely fun to get mixed up in the adventure alongside the characters. Love it! The pace at the beginning is a little slow but once it gets going it really gets moving fast. The ending is super good and all of the characters are well written and believable. Choosing Radio as the protagonist was a very good choice because she is just as unaware as the reader is.

Definitely looking forward to book 2!
The story is just fantastic! Its a great read and the story will keep you hanging on the edge of your seat as the mysteries of the story unravel in front of you. All the characters are so interesting and well written, and telling the story from Studio's perspective was a great choice. I'll be sure to buy the rest of the books when they're released!
